RELIGION IV

Course Syllabus 2009-2010

Mr. Donald Robinson

Introduction

Religion IV is a class that will both challenge your brain as well as tug at your heart as we explore deep issues of faith, beliefs, life philosophy, marriage and family issues, and questions of your ultimate destiny.  We will engage in discussions, field trips, group presentations, outreach activities. You will be challenged to become your best you can be as together we develop important life skills: honesty, integrity, self-discipline, spirituality, and respect. The big question is not whether you pass or fail, but whether you will fulfill the purpose for your existence. Let’s work together to make this the best year of your life.

Goals:

 

  • Lead students to the loving and redeeming God of Scripture (S)
  • Expose students to biblical history and a history of Christianity so as to foster a proper appreciation for the teachings of the SDA Church (T/S)
  • Help students develop a knowledge of Scripture thus fostering the transforming work of the Holy Spirit leading to conversion (S/T)
  • Teach students the value of human life and respect for others (I/R)
  • Teach students important academic and life skills (C/T/I)
  • Create an atmosphere for safe and positive exploration of social, emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges that young people face (R/H/S)
  • Promote a holistic way of life (H/S/T)
  • Value the Bible as the guide to a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ (S/R)
  • Understand and accept the life, death, resurrection, and intercession of Jesus Christ as assurance of salvation (S/R)

Course requirement include, but are not limited to, the following:

·        Community outreach project

·        Group presentations

·        Group/individual projects (one major project per quarter)

·        Tests and quizzes

·        Semi-weekly reports

·        Portfolio

·        Chapel Presentation

·        Visitations

Social Contract


We, both the teacher and students, agree to promote a safe positive learning environment at all times and treat one another with courtesy, honesty, and acceptance.

We also agree to obey the following rules:

  1. Speak English
  2. Treat others with respect
  3. Keep our area clean
  4. No chewing gum

 

If someone breaks this contract, we will:

*   Acknowledge contract breaker by using a sign

*   Give offender the opportunity to correct behavior by asking questions

*   Remain calm and respectful

*   Affirm the correct behavior

*   Follow the contract and consequence plan (Cirillo, 2005, p. 11).

 

Consequences for Violating Classroom Contract:

o        Step 1 -- Warning.

o        Step 2 -- Name on board.

o        Step 3 -- One check mark- 15-minute detention.

o        Step 4 – (Yellow Card) Two check marks – 25-minute detention.

o        Step 5 – (Red Card) Three check marks – 35-minute detention and removal from the classroom.

o        Repeating of steps 1 to 5 in the same week results in a discipline ticket.

o        If you skip your detention you automatically move to the next step.
